Types of Noun

There are a lot of things that exist around us .Just imagine how difficult it would be to identify them if these things did not have any specific names. To solve this problem, the saviour that comes into play in the English language is Noun. Noun as defined since ages is nothing but the name given to a person, place, animal or thing. Noun can be categorised into different types. The following list makes it more clear.

  1. Common Noun: It refers to the name of a person, place , animal or thing in general. For example: boys , girls , pen, cat, dog , cousin etc.
  2. Proper Noun: It refers to the name of a person, place or thing in specific. For example: Raman , Sohini , The Taj Mahal . The Ramayana , The Red Fort etc.
  3. Abstract Noun: It refers to those nouns which cannot be seen or touched physically.In simple terms, it can be called abstract.It can be the feelings , emotions, qualities of a person, place , animal or thing. For example: love , hatred, cowardice, fear etc.
  4. Concrete Noun: It refers to the nouns which can be touched or felt. For example: chair , apple , table, dog etc.
  5. Collective Noun: It refers to a group of people, place, things. For example: a class of students , a jury of judges etc.
  6. Material Noun: It refers to those nouns that tell about a thing from which something is made. For example: The necklace is made of gold. Gold in this case is a material noun.
  7. Singular Noun: It refers to any one person, place, animal or thing. For example : cat, dog, boy , girl etc.
  8. Plural Noun: It refers to more than one person, place , animal or thing. For example: pens, glasses, pencils, girls etc.
  9. Countable Noun: A noun whose number can be counted is termed as Countable Noun. For example : ten pens . eight books, four tables, two chairs . In these examples, the number of pen, books, tables and chairs can be counted.
  10. Uncountable Noun: Nouns which can not be counted are termed as Uncountable nouns. Hair , love, advice etc.
  11. Compound Noun: Nouns that are made up of one or more than one words. For example: Dog food , Bus Stop etc.
