Whole Numbers – Uses of the Number Line - Part 2

  • Multiplication on Number Line
  • Summary
  • What’s Next?

In our previous segment, we learnt how to add and subtract whole numbers, using a number line. In this segment, we will learn how to perform multiplication on the number line.

How to multiply whole numbers on a number line?

Multiplication is nothing but repetitive addition. So when we multiply two numbers, all we are doing is adding one number a specific number of times.

For example: 3 × 4

We know that this is nothing but adding 3, 4 times. So 3 × 4 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3.

In addition and subtraction using the number line, we moved one unit distance at a time. But in multiplication, we move multiple units at a time.

So on the number line, starting from 0, we move 3 spaces, 4 times as shown in the image below.

The number to which the final arrow points is the answer, which in this case is 12. Since 3 × 4 = 4 × 3, we can also move 4 spaces, 3 times to arrive at the same answer.

Multiplication on Number Line
  • Always start counting from zero and move from left to right.
  • Move multiple steps at a time, skipping other numbers in between.

What’s next?

In our next segment of Class 6 Maths, we will learn the properties of whole numbers.
