Depending upon the position of centromere, the chromosome is of four types:

(i) Metacentric chromosome - Two arms are equal and centromere is in middle.

(ii) Submetacentric chromosome - One arm is slightly long and the other is slightly short and centromere is slightly away from the middle point.

(iii) Acrocentric chromosome - One arm is very short and the other is long and the centromere is near the end.

(iv) Telocentric chromosome - Arms are at one side only and centromere is at the tip of the chromosome.
