The predominant stage in the life cycle of a moss is the gametophyte. This consists of two stages.
(a) Protonema: It directly develops from a spore. It is creeping, green, branched and filamentous stage.
(b) Leafy stage: It develops from protonema as a lateral bud. This stage consists of upright , slender axes bearing spirally arranged leaves. This structure is attached to the soil through multicellular and branched rhizoids. This stage bears the sex organs.
