Interphase is the longest phase of the cell cycle which is responsible for DNA duplication as well as cell growth.

Following events take place during the interphase:

G1 Phase

S Phase

G2 Phase

G1 Phase:

Stage of cell growth

Onset of DNA preparation

High metabolic activity of the cell.

S Phase

Onset of DNA synthesis.

Amount of DNA per cell doubles, whereas the chromosome number remains the same.

G2 Phase:

Continuous cell growth as the cell prepares itself for mitosis.

RNA and Proteins are actively synthesized.
