Are parthenocarpy and apomixis different phenomenon? Discuss their benefits.

Parthenocarpy:

When fruit is formed without fertilization it is called parthenocarpy, seeds are absent in these fruits.

Example of parthenocarpy is Banana.

Benefit- Parthenocarpy is used to produce seedless fruits e.g. seedless cucumber.

Apomixis:

In this, there is seed formation without fertilization.

It mimics sexual reproduction as the end product is same.

Benefit-It is very beneficial in plant breeding, for crop improvement.

Thus, both the phenomena are different as the end products of both are different.

Parthenocarpy is formation of fruit without fertilization whereas apomixis is formation of seed without fertilization.

Parthenocarpy is useful to produce seedless fruits and Apomixis has an important role in plant breeding.
