Question

A single pea plant in your kitchen garden produces pods with viable seeds, but the individual papaya plant does not. Explain. (Two mark Questions).

The pea plant is monoecious is bisexual (the male and female sex organs are present on the same plant) while the papaya plant is dioecious  (male and female sex organs are present on different plants).

Hence, self-pollination is possible in pea plants resulting in the production of seeds.

Cross-pollination is a must for reproduction in the papaya plant.

There will be no pollination when only a single plant is present and hence, no fruits and seeds are produced.

The pea plant produces viable seeds due to self-pollination while the single papaya plant cannot produce viable seeds due to lack of pollination.
