Full form of IELTS

" International English Language Testing System" is the full form of IELTS. It is an international standard test to assess English language proficiency for non-native English speakers who wish to study or work in a country where English is the language of communication. It was established in 1989. It uses a nine-point scale that reflects levels of proficiency, half-scores like 5.5 are possible. It is recognized by universities and employers in many countries such as Australia, Canada, Ireland, the USA, the UK, and New Zealand. IELTS is one of the two main English language tests in the world. The second is TOEFL.

IELTS Version

There are two versions of IELTS.

  1. Academic version: The academic version is intended for students who want to enroll in universities and other institutions of higher learning and for professionals such as doctors, engineers, nurses, etc. who want to serve in the English-speaking countries.
  2. General Training Version: The General Training version is designed for those seeking non-academic training or for immigration purposes.

IELTS Test Syllabus and Pattern

  • A detailed understanding of the IELTS exam syllabus and pattern is valuable for applicants trying to score well in the IELTS exam.
  • The IELTS syllabus consists of four sections: Writing, Speaking, Listening and Reading.
  • All four segments will be marked and the applicant will also receive an overall IELTS score.
  • The total score represents the sum of the scores in the four skill areas.
  • The total duration of the exam is 2 hours 45 minutes.
