Full form of IEEE

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is the full form of IEEE. IEEE is a technical professional society dedicated to technology development and innovation. It serves scientists, engineers, and professionals involved in all areas of science and technology. It mainly focuses on electronics and communication engineering, electrical engineering, information technology, and computer engineering. Based in New York, USA, it is an association with a non-profit organization.

History of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

  • A small group of electrical professionals formed an organization in 1884 called the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE for short).
  • The new industry of wireless telegraphy gave rise to a new society in 1912, the IRE (Institute of Radio Engineers).
  • As membership grew in both societies, the IRE grew faster to become a larger group by 1957.
  • IRE and AIEE merged on January 1, 1963, to form IEEE. At the time of its inception, the organization had 150,000 members, 140,000 of whom resided in the US.
  • IEEE continued to expand in the following decades. By the beginning of the 21st century, it had grown to 39 companies; 130 Journals, Transactions, and Journals; 900 active standards; and more than 300 conferences per year.
  • By 2020, IEEE had more than 395,000 members in 160 countries.

  • IEEE is run by a group of appointed and elected volunteers. They represent members from 10 global geographic regions and 46 companies and technical boards.
  • The 39 companies are involved in many technical areas, each individually focusing on separate areas.

  • IEEE 1284 - Parallel port. This is the interface used by early desktop computers.

  • IEEE 802.1 - MAC. Media access control
  • IEEE 802.2 - LLC. Logical connection control
  • IEEE 802.3 – This working group defines standards for access and control of the physical and data link layers over wired Ethernet.
