Full form of HAL

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is the full form of HAL. HAL is a state-owned Indian aerospace and defense company headquartered in Bangalore, India. It is handled by the Indian Ministry of Defence.

The government company is primarily engaged in aviation activities and is currently engaged in the production and manufacture of aircraft, design, helicopters, jet engines and their spare parts. It has many facilities scattered across India including Kanpur, Nasik, Bangalore, Koraput, Korwa, Lucknow, Kasaragod and Hyderabad.

History of HAL

  • HAL was founded in Bangalore on 23 December 1940 by Walchand Hirachand as Hindustan Aircraft Limited. The office started in a bungalow on Domlur Street called "Eventide".
  • The Indian government bought a 1/3 stake in HAL and realized its strategic importance in 1941.
  • The HT-2 Trainer aircraft, built by HAL, was first operated in August 1951.
  • While AIL (Aeronautics India Limited) was established in August 1963, an enterprise owned and controlled by the Government of India to start production of MiG-21 aircraft in India.
  • Hindustan Aircraft Limited was merged with Aeronautics India Limited in October 1964 to form HAL.
  • A separate HAL unit for the development of Cheetah & Chetak helicopters in Bangalore was established in 1970.
  • Avionics Design Bureau was established in Hyderabad in 1971 to manufacture and also develop UHF, IFF, HF, radio altimeters and components and so on.
  • It started production of "Jaguar" aircraft in 1979 under a license agreement with British Aerospace.
  • In 1982, an agreement was signed with the USSR on the production of rotating MiG-27 M.
  • In 1988, a separate HAL department was created to contribute to the country's space programs.
  • In March 2007, a new ACD (Aircraft Composite Division) was established to produce composite material for its own applications such as LCA, ALH and so on.
  • A separate LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) Tejas unit for the production of light combat aircraft was established in Bangalore in March 2014.
