History of BARC

  • Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha started the nuclear program in India. He established TIFR (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research) in 1945 for research in nuclear science.
  • Dr. Bhabha founded AEET (Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay) in January 1954 to strengthen nuclear facilities and use nuclear energy for the betterment of the country.
  • Dr. Bhabha also set up numerous BARC training centers to meet the energy requirements of atomic energy research and development activities.
  • AEET was designated as BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Center) in 1966 after the death of Dr. Bhabha on 22 January 1967.
  • BARC's expertise continued in nuclear research programs to make India independent in power generation.

BARC research on various sectors

BARC researching in various field including:

  • Nuclear waste management process and so on.
  • Using nuclear fuel recycling
  • Agricultural sector
  • Medicine field
  • It is accountable for the country’s smooth operation of the different nuclear reactors.

Role of Atomic Energy in India

BARC's main role is to reduce carbon consumption in India's power sector. Renewable energy sources are good for the environment, but the supply is not continuous. Therefore, they cannot be considered the first option energy source. However, nuclear energy is a continuous energy source with negligible carbon footprints and thus is emerging as a critical component for India to meet the international environmental standard.
