Full Form of ASEAN

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations is the full form of ASEAN. ASEAN is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising ten Southeast Asian countries that promotes intergovernmental cooperation. ASEAN also encourages political, economic, security, educational, military, and socio-cultural integration between its representatives and other Asian nations.

ASEAN often communicates regularly with other countries in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. ASEAN, the main force of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, operates a regional network of alliances and dialogue representatives and is considered by some to be a global power, a Central Asia-Pacific cooperative union, and a strong and successful organization.

History of ASEAN

ASEAN was established by its five founding representative states in Bangkok, Thailand, on 8 August 1967.
On 7 January 1984, Brunei joined.
On 28 July 1997, Vietnam joined.
On 30 April 1999, Cambodia joined.
On July 23, 1997, Laos and Myanmar joined.
In 1976, member states signed the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation to illustrate the sponsorship of solidarity, peace-building, friendship, and cooperation.
The ASEAN Plus Three Forum, which included South Korea, China, and Japan, was established in 1997 to further expand regional integration.
ASEAN signed a free trade agreement among its representatives to promote trade.
Member states also agreed not to produce nuclear weapons and to defend against terrorism.
In 2005, the East Asia Summit was launched and included Australia, India, Russia, New Zealand, and the US.

Principles of ASEAN

Below are the basic principles as outlined in the TAC (Treaty of Amity and Cooperation) in Southeast Asia, which ASEAN member states adopted in 1976.

A common basis for freedom, equality, and territorial sovereignty of all member countries
A growing member state has the right to conduct its national life free from outside interference, rebellion, or power
Not to cause each other problems in internal affairs
Resolve conflicts or disagreements through cooperative means
Oppose the risk or use of force and promote practical cooperation between the Member States.

Importance of ASEAN in Developing International Bonding

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations helps develop a thread of understanding between member states. Countries strengthen mutual respect, indulge in peace agreements, and promote prosperity. ASEAN aims to elevate cultural activities and preserve law and justice. Nations actively participate in increasing the rate of economic and social growth at the international level.

Member States assist each other in technical, professional, and educational fields through research facilities and training. ASEAN strengthens and maintains ties with existing international agencies with appropriate protocols. Overall, this body enables member countries to prosper through strong mutual cooperation.
